A software helps to restore speech in a paralysed man

Guys, it is a new software who have helped to restore speech in a paralyzed man. This new software decodes the signals from a neural implant and voices them through a synthesiser.

Guys, it is a group of US-based scientists have provided a paralysed American man a chance to speak again, thanks to an electrode implanted in his stroke stricken brain.

Erik Ramsey, 24, was left 'almost totally paralysed' when he suffered a brain-stem stroke after a car accident years ago, however his mental faculties remained intact. In 2004, Phillip Kennedy's team at Neural Signals - a bioresearch firm based in Georgia, USA - implanted an electrode in his speech-motor cortex, hoping that the signal from Ramsey's cortex could help in restoring his speech. But this proved to be easier said than done.

However, another team led by Frank Guenther at Boston University was working on a similar problem at the time. Studying brain scans of healthy patients showed that brain signals don't code for words, but instead control the position of the lips, tongue, jaw and larynx to produce basic sounds.

Guenther's team then developed software that could identify and translate the patterns of brain activity during speech.

However, Klaus-Robert Muller at the Technical University of Berlin believes the technique might not be apt for fully 'locked-in' patients, who can't control any muscles. If you have completely locked-in patient, then the brain may begin to degrade because they are not able to control anything. Those patient might be completely unable to brain-control interface.

Guys, it is the development of Dr. Philip Kennedy and colleagues. The Doctors team developed a software that translates thoughts to a synthesiser via a neural implant, helping disabled patients communicate. What an Idea?

The gadget world : TV Tuner Card and External Hard Disk : PC exteriors - 3

Guys, it is the 3rd segment on the PC Exteriors. There are two more important accessories that I would like to expose here. Just take a look of it.

TV TUNER CARD :

This is a computer component that allows television signals to be received by a computer. For a long time I wondered what the point was. Then, I realized. Unlike the TV which is family property and subject to domestic fights for propriety rights over channels, computers are actually Personal Computers which simply translated means you can shout, "Get off my computer!" and you will be obeyed. Thus solving all channel issues if the computer has a TV Tuner Card. The other cool bit about this card is that most TV Tuners also function as video capture cards. This means they can record television shows onto a hard disk so that you can watch what you have missed and skip the ads in the bargain. Entry level cards start at Rs. 800.

EXTERNAL HARD DISK :

The rule of thumb as far as computer memory goes, is that there is never enough. No matter how much memory you have, if my hoarding abilities are anything to go by, you will run out. That is where external hard disks come in handy. They are not too expensive, they are more durable in the long run than flash drives and now with a USB Plug are very portable. Seagate is the company whose hard disks are flooding the market. A 50 GB disk costs Rs. 2,100; 80 GB is Rs. 2,400 and 120 GB is Rs. 3,900.

The gadget world : Webcams and Speakers : PC exteriors - 2

WEBCAMS :

It is one of the most user friendly media to connect the world. Most high-end and some mid range laptops come with the facility in-built. But be warned if you have egotistic propensities, you may spend more time taking photos of yourself than using it for a web conference. A basic Intel VGA camera starts at Rs. 800. The price goes up to Rs. 3,000 for a much smaller. Logitech or Microsoft with 5 mega pixel capturing capabilities.

SPEAKERS :

Speakers are important to feel the heart beatings of the world. No, laptop speakers do not do justice to the song you are watching. Actually if you don't have speakers then all you need to decide is not whether you need them, but how much you are willing to spend. Basic Intel speakers start at Rs. 300. A decent Altec Lansing set with a woofer is Rs. 1200. But if you are willing to go all out for the sound then you could get something by JBL for Rs. 20,000.

The gadget world : Memory Stick : PC exteriors - 1

Almost people know about Pen Drive. Pen drives have become so common place and so varied in designs, I have even noticed one that brings off to make a play on words on it's name by actually doubling as a pen. Yes, it is a flash memory device, it can hold up only a limited number of write and erase cycles before failure. Mid-range flash drives under normal conditions will support several hundred thousand cycles, although write operations will gradually slow as the device ages. Howerver, at the rate memory sticks are expanding in size, it will probably be time to replace the drive even before it is necessary. Another quality of being a hindrance is because of its size they are easier to misplace or lose.

Keep an eye on your flash drive, or at least, add it to your key chain. From so many days I have used Transcend pen drives that starts from Rs. 300 for 1GB of storage and Rs. 400 for 2GB. A 32 GB drive however, costs Rs. 3,400.
